What is chlorinated paraffin? What are its Applications?

2024-10-10

Features

Chlorinated paraffin is a viscous liquid with a golden yellow or amber color. It is non-flammable, non-explosive, and highly volatile. It is soluble in most organic solvents but insoluble in water and ethanol. It slowly decomposes when heated above 120℃, releasing hydrogen chloride gas. Metal oxides such as iron and zinc promote its decomposition. Chlorinated paraffin is an auxiliary plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride. It is low volatility, non-flammable, and odorless. Replacing part of the main plasticizer can reduce product costs and flammability. It is mainly used in PVC cable materials, water pipes, floor materials, films, and artificial leather.

The plasticizing effect of chlorinated paraffin is lower than that of the main plasticizer, but it can improve the electrical edge and fire resistance, and increase tensile strength. Its disadvantages are poor aging resistance and low-temperature resistance, poor secondary recycling effect, and high viscosity. However, given the current shortage and high Price of main plasticizers, it still occupies a certain market share.

Chlorinated paraffin can be mixed with related esters to form plasticizers. In addition, it also has certain flame-retardant and lubricating properties, and can also play a certain anticorrosion role if necessary.

The production capacity of chlorinated paraffin is very large. The application process is mainly based on thermal chlorination and catalytic chlorination. In special cases, photochlorination will be used.

Applications

1. Chlorinated paraffin is insoluble in water, so it can be used as a filler in coatings to reduce costs, improve cost performance, and enhance waterproof and fireproof properties.

2. Used in PVC products, as a plasticizer or auxiliary plasticizer.

3. It can also be used as an additive in rubber, paint, and cutting oil, playing a role in fire prevention, fire resistance, and improving cutting accuracy.

4. It can also be used as an anti-coagulant and anti-extrusion agent for lubricating oil.

5. Used in paints, chlorinated rubber, and styrene-butadiene rubber coatings, and as a flame retardant, adhesive, cement, and filler in plastics.

6. It can also be used as a lubricating additive and has moisture-proof and chemical resistance properties.

7. Used as a plasticizer for adhesives and sealants such as chloroprene rubber, nitrile rubber, and SBS. Chlorinated paraffin plasticized silanized polyurethane sealant has high elongation at break and good elasticity.
